Students with Disabilities

Note for students with disabilities: The Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD), located in Needles Hall, Room 1132, collaborates with all academic departments to arrange appropriate special accommodations for students with disabilities without compromising the academic integrity of the curriculum. If you require academic accommodations to lessen the impact of your disability, please register with the OPD at the beginning of each academic term.

Office Hours

Office hours are 2:30 to 3:20 pm on Fridays. If you wish to come see me during office hour, please e-mail me (using a UW e-mail address) at least 24 hours in advance. If you are not available at this time, please e-mail me to arrange another time.

Tentative Course Outline

Recommended Reading for the Course

If you would like to learn more about probability than is mentioned in class, you can look at the following books. You don't need to read any of these books to get a good mark in the class. They are provided for those who are hunting for an extra challenge.

Grading

The final grade in the course will be weighted as

G = MAX[F, (0.65F) + (0.35M)]

where F is your mark out of 100 on the final exam, and M is your mark out of 100 on the midterm. The midterm will be one hour in length and will be held during a regular class time slot. The final exam will be three hours in length.

Course Notes

Here are the course notes and assigned problems. These notes were completed on December 4. Any subsequent corrections to the notes will be annotated and dated here. The notes now include the challenge problems which appear as double-star problems, which are not formally assigned as part of the class.

The notes are available in PDF format:

From time to time, I will also post here the most up to date version of the handwritten course notes from class. These notes are in TIF format. While there are many image viewers that can view TIF files, you will need a sufficiently recent one to view the multipage format of this file. If you try and open the file and it does not work, or if you can only see the first page but not other pages, then you need a more recent image viewer. I recommend Imaging for Windows which is available on all recent Windows platforms. If you have a problem let me know.

You are not responsible for handing in assignments. However, all of material tested on the midterm and final exams will be taken directly from the assigned problems. It is up to you to do the work. I will be solving some of the problems in class and will leave the other problems to you. Between the lot of us, I hope we can get solutions to all the problems in the course. By the way, I am willing to give potentially infinitely many hints to problems that I do not solve in class myself.
