David Binder
David Binder is President of the Statistical Society of Canada for 2005-2006
and was Director General of the Methodology Branch at Statistics Canada
until 2004. While at Statistics Canada, among other things, he ensured that
the Bureau was widely recognized internationally for its research
contributions in survey methodology. David has several journal
publications, mostly relating to the theory and methods for the analysis of
complex survey data. He is very interested in the analytical use of survey
data, and in making methods that account for the sampling design available
and accessible to researchers in the social sciences. His contributions
have been incorporated in a number of commercial statistical packages.
It was David who made the initial suggestion that the Research Committee of
the Statistical Society of Canada set up a task group to address the
opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration between statisticians and
social scientists coming out of the Canadian Initiative on Social
Statistics. Now as the President of the Statistical Society of Canada he
is pursuing this agenda with vigour.
David is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected
member of the International Statistical Institute. He was also Chair of the
Statistical Society of Ottawa and of the Survey Research Methods Section of
ASA, as well as Scientific Secretary and Vice-President of the International
Association of Survey Statisticians.
