This delightful animation is based upon an ancient proof of the Pythagorean Theorem that can be found in the Chou pei suan ching from 200 B.C.E. -- the date is uncertain.

Many of us remember Euclid's famous proof of the Pythagorean Theorem as one of the big results in geometry class in high school. Euclid's construction is justifiably famous because it emerges as an integral part of his axiomatic program for planar geometry.

However, his proof is far from being the most intuitive. A few moments of looking at the animation above should provide everyone with not only a belief in the Pythagorean Theorem but also the strong conviction that it must be true!
