SCOR-EGRIE Young Economist Best Paper Award
Carole Bernard received the SCOR-EGRIE Young Economist Best Paper Award for her paper with Prof. Steven Vanduffel from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium. The paper is entitled "Financial Bounds for Insurance Claims" and was presented at the 2011 EGRIE seminar (European Group of Risk and Insurance Economics, in Vienna. (Sept. 2011)
2011 Discovery Accelerator Supplement Award from NSERC
Mu Zhu's research "Kernels and ensembles for horizontal and vertical information selection" wins a prestigious 2011 Discovery Accelerator Supplement Award from NSERC. (Sept. 2011)
W.J. Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing
The American Statistical Association has awarded the 2011 W.J. Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing to Ryan Browne (former UW Phd. Student), Stefan Steiner & Jock MacKay in recognition of their paper, "Leveraged Gauge R&R Studies", published in Technometrics August 2010, Vol.52, No3. (Aug 2011)
Nathaniel Stevens, a Masters student who is cosupervised by Stefan Steiner and Jock Mackay, was awarded an NSERC CGS scholarship for a PhD, and is now planning on pursuing a Doctorate in Statistics at the University of Waterloo.
The CRM is hosting a special thematic semester in Statistics January - June, 2011. As part of this semester there are a number of workshops that have been organized which you may find of interest. The CRM website has information on the topics of the workshops and the schedule.
NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science are available for the summer term. If you are interested, please contact professors directly to see if they would hire you to work on a project. After you have a supervisor lined up, please submit your application to Marg Feeney in MC 6137.

Mary has accepted the President's invitation to be honoured at the afternoon convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Mathematics on Friday, June 17, 2011. Let's plan to attend en masse to show our delight at this well-deserved recognition of Mary's achievements throughout her career, both as an active and retired faculty member in Statistics and Actuarial Science. The faculty, graduate students and staff of the department are very pleased to announce the launch of a new biostatistics training program. The Oncology Research and Methods Training Program is an exciting and innovative training program made possible by support from the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research's Division of High Impact Clinical Trials. This program will involve the creation of a graduate student internship program which will place up to five funded graduate students per year in active centers for cancer research. In addition this program offers more focused SAS training, an Oncology Methods Research Seminar Series, and an Oncology Research and Methods Center within the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science.
