History

  • Part of the University of Waterloo Faculty of Mathematics
  • Founded in 1967
  • Programs in mathematical, computational & statistical sciences
  • Statistics was one of five founding departments

Overview of research

Probability, statistics and related applied fields include

  • Biostatistics and epidemiology, classification, environmental statistics, geometric probability, industrial statistics and quality improvement, longitudinal data analysis, multivariate analysis, pattern recognition, queueing theory, simulation, reliability, statistical computing, statistical genetics, statistical learning, stochastic process models and inference, survey methodology, survival and event history analysis, and time series.

Actuarial science and finance

  • Financial risk management, insurance solvency assessment, risk theory, simulation and quasi-Monte Carlo methods, pensions and social security, pricing of financial instruments, and stochastic modelling.

Faculty research chairs

  • Tier I Canada Research Chair in Statistical Methods in Health Research, held by Richard Cook
  • Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Chair in Financial Risk Management, held by Mary Hardy
  • Munich Reinsurance Chair in Insurance, held by Gordon Willmot
